Panasonic New Launches Multi-Capable Premium Compact Camera ZS50

Panasonic is introducing a new jacket-pocket-sized digital compact camera with LVF (Live View Finder) featuring powerful 30x optical zoom (35mm equivalent: 24-720mm) for the latest flagship of popular ZS series*. The LUMIX ZS series has won worldwide popularity for having both the versatile 30x zoom and authentic camera features such as the control ring, LVF and RAW recording. The new DMC-ZS50 makes an upgrade in low light shooting by using a new image sensor that has higher sensitivity. The LVF is also renewed by enhancing the resolution and adding an eye-sensor.

Crystallizing its optical technologies, Panasonic succeeded in integrating 24mm ultra wide-angle 30x zoom lens in slim, flat body and the advanced HYBRID O.I.S.+ (Hybrid Optical Image Stabilizer Plus) effectively suppresses handshake in both photo and video recording.

The new Large Pixel Sized High Sensitivity MOS sensor and the advanced image processor Venus Engine feature high speed, high sensitivity image recording to realize 1,920 x 1,080 50p (PAL) astonishingly smooth full-HD video recording in AVCHD Progressive format and high speed burst shooting at 10 fps in high picture quality. They also realize contributes to the quick start-up and Light Speed AF to catch the most fleeting shooting opportunities.

With the Wi-Fi® connectivity, users can connect the camera directly to their smartphone/tablet by activating “Panasonic Image App”, the dedicated application. By using the NFC (Near Field Communication) technology, users can connect the camera to their smartphone/tablet anywhere at one-touch. A newly added guidance menu will appear when activated, and will assist users to instantly access to the function they are looking for. There is also a newly added function called “Jump Shot” which releases the shutter when the user jumps and reaches the top. The camera receives a signal emitted from the smartphone/tablet’s accelerometer to recognize this.

A variety of special effects that add fun to shooting experience are integrated in DMC-ZS50–Creative Control, Creative Retouch and Creative Panorama. The newly added Time Lapse Shot lets users to shoot multiple images in a certain interval, and combine to make it into an MP4 file. A 3cm Zoom Macro shooting is also available on DMC-ZS50.

Integrating unprecedented level of function variety into the pocket-sized body with 30x super zoom lens, the DMC-ZS50 is an ultimate digital compact camera that gives photographer unlimited way of use in any shooting situations.

1. The Large Pixel Sized High Sensitivity MOS Sensor and Venus Engine for Clear Night Shots

The Large Pixel Sized High Sensitivity MOS sensor is integrated in DMC-ZS50 to realize both high quality image recording and high speed signal processing. In order to enhance the performance in low lit situations, the DMC-ZS50 incorporates a 12.1-megapixel MOS sensor, whose pixel size is approx. 1.5 times larger than the DMC-ZS40. This also increases the light receiving amount for approx.. 1.5 times and enables users to take clear images in dark situations such as night sceneries.

The superior NR (Noise Reduction) system in the Venus Engine enables deliberate noise reduction process without missing low-frequency noise in its large detection area. In addition, the Multi-process NR (Noise Reduction) works in two separate steps allowing even finer control over noise level. The texture of noise itself, regardless of the noise size, is improved with this deliberate control, which is resulting in the reproduction of smooth human skin even in high sensitivity recording.

The high speed digital signal output technology is integrated to realize high speed consecutive shooting and full-HD video recording. It lets the DMC-ZS50 shoot 10 fps in 12.1-megapixel full resolution with mechanical shutter and 5 fps with continuous AF. It also enables the camera to record full-HD 50p (PAL) smooth video. In addition, the high speed video at 100 (PAL) fps in HD quality is another advantage of the sensor which captures the motion of a subject. The frame rate, AF setting and the recording resolution can be easily selected according to the movement of the subject. The actuator for AF lens motor complies 240 fps high speed AF drive. It also contributes to the quick start-up and Light Speed AF to catch the most fleeting shooting opportunities.

2. Powerful 30x Optical Zoom LEICA DC Lens with 24mm Ultra Wide Angle in a Slim, Compact Body

The DMC-ZS50 incorporates 24mm ultra wide angle powerful 30x optical zoom LEICA DC VARIO-ELMAR lens (35mm camera equivalent: 24-720mm), which is outstanding in class for its quality and versatility. Comprising 12 elements in 10 groups including 5 aspherical lenses with 10 aspherical surfaces, 3 ED lenses and 1 UHR (Ultra High Refractive Index) lens, adoption of ultra thin lens for its optical system makes the unit’s overall length short to fit in the slim body despite its versatile zoom range from 24mm ultra wide angle to 30x telephoto. The use of 5 dual-sided aspherical lenses enables the camera to achieve high MTF value even in telephoto zoom range. To fit the lens unit in the slim, compact body, Panasonic combines state-of-the-art optical technologies – adopting sliding structure to the O.I.S. lens unit, dividing zoom lenses in 6 groups, and applying extensible mechanism for the internal lens tube. Thanks to the Intelligent Resolution technology, the Intelligent Zoom is available with the DMC-ZS50 which further extends the zoom ratio to 60x equivalent with minimum deterioration of picture quality even combining the digital zoom.

For image stabilization, the advanced image stabilizer HYBRID O.I.S.+ is integrated to suppress hand-shake vibration effectively even in shooting using high zoom. It adopts 3 ball-point support system instead of conventional shaft type system allowing the O.I.S. lens unit to make more flexible, smoother movement.

3. A Host of Advanced Options for More Creative Freedom

The DMC-ZS50 is an ultimate compact camera with unprecedented level of option variety.

Practical LVF (Live View Finder)

The DMC-ZS50 equips a 0.2-inch LVF (Live View Finder) with 1,166K-dot resolution, with approx.100% field of view. It assures stable framing and high visibility of live view image even under strong sunlight or when shooting with high zoom. The precise resolution assists users to notice the focus points clearly. Furthermore, an eye-sensor is added which lets users to use the LVF intuitively.

Manual Control

It allows full manual control with Manual mode in addition to Program AE / Aperture-Priority AE / Shutter Speed Priority AE mode. Manual control is easy to try thanks to the Control Ring, which enables direct, intuitive control over frequently-used settings – aperture, shutter speed, more precise focusing, filter effect, scene mode, etc.

Focus Peaking

For more precise control over focusing, the DMC-ZS50 incorporates Focus Peaking function that shows the peak of focus in MF mode. Users can see the peaking of focus while monitoring the subject in live view. It can be set to HIGH / LOW / OFF and the color can also be changed to blue, white or orange according to the color of the shooting scene during live view.

RAW Compatibility

The DMC-ZS50 complies with recording image in RAW. The software SILKYPIX Developer Studio 4.2 SE allows dramatically higher quality image development from RAW to JPEG. Even the images shot at high ISO setting can be produced sharply with minimum noise. This software also enables high quality JPEG processing, that lets users to adjust images in 16 bit data and re-develop it into JPEG with minimum deterioration of image quality.

4. The 1,920 x 1,08050p (PAL) Full-HD Video Recording Featuring HYBRID O.I.S.+ and Level Shot Function

The DMC-ZS50 can record high-resolution full-HD 1,920 x 1,080 50p (PAL) videos in AVCHD Progressive (MPEG-4 / H.264) format. Featuring the progressive full HD video recording capability, subjects with fast motion or fine details are reproduced even more clearly. The powerful 30x optical zoom with 2-step Zoom function is available in video recording.

Panasonic’s advanced image stabilizer POWER O.I.S. is upgraded with an inclusion of HYBRID O.I.S.+ for video recording with 5-axis correction that detects and effectively compensates for the camera's 5 types of movement – horizontal, vertical, axis of rotation, vertical rotation and horizontal rotation. The Level Shot Function detects the horizontal line of recording image and keep it even if the camera is tilted. It lets users take stable video even in blind recording such as shooting from high angle. The popular iA (Intelligent Auto) assists easy video recording without needing a special technique. The DMC-ZS50 also complies with 25p (PAL) in MP4 format which has high compatibility with PCs or smartphones/tablets for editing or sharing the videos.

Incorporating a stereo zoom microphone, the videos also come with the high-quality stereo sound of Dolby® Digital, to offer highly realistic sound to the video. Mechanical noise caused by a zooming operation is suppressed to improve the clearness. Also, the Auto Wind Cut function is also available to block out most of the noise from background wind automatically making the human voice to stand out.

5. Shoot, View, Share Images in More Flexible Way with Wi-Fi® Connectivity with NFC

The DMC-ZS50 integrates a Wi-Fi® connectivity (IEEE 802.11 b/g/n) with NFC* (Near Field Communication) technology that users can connect the camera directly to their smartphone/tablet by activating “Panasonic Image App”, the dedicated application. In other ways, users can also connect the camera to the smartphone/tablet without NFC easily by reading the QR code or just selecting the camera’s SSID that does not require password inputs. After connecting, a newly added guidance menu appears that assists users to instantly access to the function they are looking for.

There is also a newly added function called “Jump Shot” which releases the shutter when the user jumps and reaches the top. The camera receives a signal emitted from the smartphone/tablet’s accelerometer to recognize this. By using the “One Touch Geotagging”, users may benefit from transferring the geographic log information of a smartphone/tablet via NFC connection. The Instant Transfer function allows the camera to transfer the photo data to the designated electronic devices automatically whenever shutter is released. In playback mode, users can also touch the image displayed on the camera to transfer it to the smartphone/tablet.

* This function can be used with NFC compatible devices with Android (2.3.3 or above).

6. Other Options for Upgrading Photographic Enjoyment

Time Lapse Shot - The Time Lapse Shot automatically starts recording photos at time lapse sequence once the start time, interval and the number of pictures to shoot are set.

Zoom Macro - Allowing closet focusing distance of 3cm to take fine macro shot easily.

Level Gauge - The Level Gauge lets the camera detect the horizontal / vertical angle of view which is convenient to make level in composition.

Composition Guide - It is easy to shoot a photo in good composition by just choosing most suitable pattern of composition from – Rule of Thirds Offset, Diagonal Lines, Tunnel, Radiation1, Radiation2 and S-shape – and framing the subjects along the guided lines. Well-composed image has a stunning perspective and it will dramatically look refined. This function can be used in shooting not only with LCD but also with EVF.

HDR (HighDynamicRange) - Several photos are consecutively shot at different exposure level to make a single composite a good-looking picture without whiteout (over-exposure) or blackout (under-exposure) even in difficult lighting conditions.

Creative Controls

The DMC-ZS50 is also equipped with popular Creative Control and Creative Retouch featuring a total of 15 filter effects – Expressive, Retro, Old Days, High Key, Low Key, Sepia, Dynamic Monochrome, Impressive Art, High Dynamic, Cross Process, Toy Effect, Miniature Effect, Soft Focus, Star Filter and One Point Color. The Creative Control lets users shoot with a filter effect while checking how it makes difference on the picture, which can be used for video recording, too*. The Creative Retouch enables applying a filter effect on the picture even after shooting in camera.

With the Creative Panorama function, it is possible to shoot a horizontal / vertical panoramic image with consequent shots taken by overlaying the previous picture and to put on a filter effect of Retro, Old Days, Expressive, High Key, Low Key, Sepia, Dynamic Monochrome, Impressive Art, High Dynamic, Star Filter, Cross Process, Soft Focus and One Point Color.
